Exercise Physiologist

Exercise Physiologist

The Accredited Exercise Physiologists at South Coast Sports Medicine are an integral part of the Sports Medicine team, with extensive knowledge about the effects of exercise on the musculoskeletal system. Tertiary trained over at least 4 years, their understanding of exercise effects for individual patients and their chronic conditions is evidence-based and extensive.

They are able to prescribe a course of exercise for fitness, illnesses or rehabilitation. This includes treating medical conditions such as obesity, arthritis, diabetes, cancer, osteoporosis, depression, asthma and cardiovascular diseases. When appropriate, it should be possible for many patients to be progressed to, for example, external personal training or group fitness providers who lack the depth of knowledge and training in chronic conditions.

Working alongside doctors, physiotherapist, nutritionist and other allied health professionals they aim to have a whole body approach in treating and managing your symptoms.

The exercise approach taken by our Exercise Physiologists is based on the latest research, prescribing exercise programs based on biochemical movements, motor control, cardiovascular and metabolic principles. Our in-house rehabilitation gym is also available for casual use after having a EP appointment to continue your prescribed exercises. Many patients achieve successful outcomes with a home-based program, or a review of their existing exercise program.

If youve been diagnosed with any kind of cardiovascular disease, exercise can be daunting - you want to do enough to have a healthful effect, not too much that you risk any further problems. Our Accredited Exercise Physiologists run supervised sessions everyday to help you improve your heart health & fitness.

Our Netball guru and Physio extraordinaire, Stacey, has come up with three exercises for our netball rookie, Jake, to practice to prevent injuries to knees and ankles:

Dynamic pelvis stability using a fit ball against a wall to do a single leg squat.

Match simulation exercises like a safe landing after a quick, unprompted 90 degree turn.

And the most brutal, a jump and a push from a teammate to simulate the mid air bumps that “non-contact” sports like netball are renowned for! Here, we’re aiming for a safe landing without knees falling in.

A great online resource for netballers is but nothing beats a program tailored just for you by our Accredited Exercise Physiologists
